Not tango specific

but this is a very interesting article about dance and its effect to the mind.

No wonder some great dancers often seem to be odd-behavior or socially awkward…there’s only a thin line between genius and insanity. :-)

If tango is to die…let it be walking

Because that’s the only suitable way.

From maestro Jorge Dispari. If you are interested in, watch the clip. My Spanish is very limited, so I could only quote the subtitle.

It is not very often for us to hear such an honest talk. A lot of teachers try to sell you the glamorous side of tango; try to make you someone who you are not, a star, a performance dancer, an “artist”. Otherwise, they are afraid that they would not be commercially successful. And a lot of student are drew to tango, because it is sexy, it is fashionable… they want to learn the form, without the trouble of understanding its culture, its essence. Like in martial arts, however, one doesn’t go too far learning just the form. Any art without soul isn’t good art. Anybody can teach how to move, very few can tell why.

Here is a performance by them, dance (or should I say walk) to D’Arienzo. No sacada, no boleo, no volgada, not even a giro. Simply walk…

PS. Have a wonderful holiday, fellow tanguero(a)s!!! :-)

The sequence will be the consequence

of what I am feeling in this moment. — Sebastian Achaval of an interview from the current El Tangauta issue.

One of my favorite things to do is to hear what others have to say about tango, their understanding, their perspectives and their lineage (whom they have studied with or have been influenced by).  Food for thought. After all, one’s mentality determines a great deal how one dances tango.

Excerpts that I like:

So if I’m dancing very close with her and I need a little distance, the separation will be a caress, not an ” I’m letting you go because now comes a step.”…. If I have to distance myself it’s because the move requires space, not to show a sequence, the sequence will be the consequence of what I’m feeling in this moment.

If I have to stop, wait for 5 beats and then start again, I’ll wait for those beats. … We also try to achieve presence, to ensure it’s clear that this pause is not a down moment. The dance should be seen throughout the body, including during a pause.

Now… what style did they dance?

Social dance at Club Sunderland

Performance:

I can see quite a few moves that contemporary dancers use.

Note: this is the space they use for Monday and Wednesday practica now, 2nd floor on top of the restaurant.

Improvised milonga

They had danced five numbers at the milonguero night 2010. This is my most favorite one. Not that the rest of their performances weren’t brilliant, but this one was truly improvised.
