“Do less…”
January 11th, 2010
Osvaldo Zotto said to my tanguero friend at a private lesson.
My friend asked: ” Less of what”.
“Less of everything.” Maestro replied.
(M, I apologize if I am quoting this without prior permission.)
Gavito, whom my friend also had the honor to study with, had said similar:
“The absence of the movement sometimes can speak louder than the movement itself…”
And the old Chinese proverb says: Silence prevails sound.
Slowly I am realizing the wisdom of the late maestros.

Personally I like:
“The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes – ah, that is where the art resides!” -Artur Schnabel
LT, thanks for sharing… another one to ponder on.
