Boleo
“Can I ask you to work with me on boleo?” One beginner, in her heelless dance sneaker, asked earnestly, after I danced a song of vals with her in open hold.
I was a little surprised that a beginner knew what a boleo was.
“Eh… Ok, here is my thought on boleo.” I said to her. ” Don’t worry about that. It is not something that you need to have a good time dancing. You will do it naturally when your body is ready. ” I worked with her on cross and walk instead.
Earlier, I danced two songs with the teacher who was hosting the practica. The music was inspiring, the connection was good, her boleo was effortlessly amazing. There was some applause at the end of our dance, from the student who were sitting and watching.
Not long after, we were sitting there, talking about music and Sebastian Arce’s public petition to DJ. Two students came up to her.
” Your boleo looked amazing. Can you show me how to do it?” The girl wearing platform shoes asked.
I smiled… watching the teacher explaining to the student that it took a long time to do a snappy boleo like that, that one had to build the body and technique for it, and that it was actually her option to do a boleo or not…
“I lead a boleo once every other months in the milongas.” I couldn’t help but cut in.
“You are a stingy boleo leader. ” Teacher joked.
“There isn’t always space.” I was serious. ” The ladies aren’t always ready. Besides, you really don’t need boleo to enjoy dancing.”
“Can you show me how to do a back ochos then?” The student asked.
Sure. Teacher went to work with the student.
